Geneva W. Samuel

Geneva Washington Samuel, 75, departed this earthly life unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital.

She was born March 31, 1934, in Sumter, S.C., to the late McCullum Washington Sr. and Ethel Herriott Washington.

She was married to the late Emerson Eugene Samuel in 1963. Two children were born of that union, Rico E. Samuel and Damian D. Samuel.

She was an educator for more than 30 years, 29 of which were with Fredericksburg city public schools at Hugh Mercer Elementary School. She was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site), where she was a member of several ministries.

She is survived by her two sons, Rico E. Samuel of Baltimore, Md., and Damian D. Samuel and his wife, Stephanie, of Spotsylvania County; a special great-niece, Eunice Washington of Spotsylvania, whom she raised as her daughter; one stepdaughter, Deborah Paulette Hawthorne and her husband, Frank, of Spotsylvania; two granddaughters, Carena and Kyra; two grandsons, Brian Hawthorne and his wife, Kim, of San Antonio, Texas, and Kobie Hawthorne of Spotsylvania; one sister, Mildred Williams of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, McCullum Washington Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Beaufort, S.C.; three sisters-in-law, Sarah Geraldine Thompson of Fredericksburg, Petronila Washington of Ocala, Fla., and Darlene Washington of West River, Md.; one aunt, Mary Jenkins of New Jersey; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site), with the Rev. Nathaniel Young giving the eulogy and the Rev. Anthony Parrish officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m.in Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at A.L. Bennett & Son Funeral Home, 200 Butternut Drive, Fredericksburg, and one hour prior to the funeral Tuesday at the church.
