Go to home page FROM STAFF REPORTS The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team forced several late turnovers and converted late free throws in defeating Shenandoah 68-61 last night in the South Region Shootout at Hampden-Sydney College. The Eagles fell behind early, and trailed by as many as 10, at 16-6, with 13:20 remaining in the first half. But the Eagles used a pair of Brandon Altmann baskets, and 3-pointers from Ryan Farrar and Tad Dickman to tie the score at 16 with 11:32 left. After four ties and three lead changes, Bart Reese hit a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a three-point halftime lead. After Shenandoah cut the deficit to one at 40-39, Mike Fumai hit a key 3-pointer to up the Eagles' advantage to 43-39 with 11:09 to play. Shenandoah was able to cut the deficit to three at 64-61 with 39 seconds left, but Qaiser Ahmed and Dickman each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch for the win. Altmann led Mary Washington with 25 points and added six rebounds, while Farrar was the only other Eagle in double figures with 11. Mary Washington (2-2) will face North Carolina Wesleyan, which lost yesterday to host Hampden-Sydney, today at 2 p.m. |
