"Upbeat music at an upbeat event" is how Jeff Curtis, executive director of the Orange Downtown Alliance, an economic development group, described this Saturday's first ever "Celebrating the Spirit in Orange." The event will feature three area church choirs: Zion Baptist Church, Little Zion Baptist Church and Shady Grove Baptist Church. Each group will perform onstage, with a finale that will feature a blending of all three. "With 20 to 30 people in each choir, we will have a group of between 50 and 60 by the end of the concert," remarked Curtis. The range of music being sung includes old-fashioned gospel, upbeat modern Christian music and, of course, seasonal music of Christmastime. "A good time and participation from all of the community is the goal," said Curtis. And that last aspect is how Curtis and the Downtown Alliance came up with the idea for this type of concert. "What better way to bring people together and celebrate the season than through music," said Curtis. Members of the three churches providing the singing went a step further with the spirit of the season, and volunteered to provide free home-made cakes and pastries and hot chocolate. Additionally, vendors from the farmers market, who generally close for the day earlier in the afternoon, have agreed to stay open throughout the event. "What we are looking to create is a good feeling, old-fashioned Christmas celebration," said Curtis. Visitors can have a full day of holiday fun in downtown Orange as well. In addition to the choir concert, there will be a Christmas bazaar at St. Isidore the Farmer Catholic Church from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and children will be able to have their picture taken with Santa at the train station from 10 a.m. to noon.
