Francis Hingston

Francis Hingston, 88, of Ruther Glen died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Hingston retired after 31 years of service with the United States Marine Corps as a chief warrant officer. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis and served two tours in Vietnam.

Mr. Hingston was a deacon at Travelers Rest Baptist Church. He loved baseball, and as a young man he worked out with the Boston Red Sox.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma L. Hingston, of Ruther Glen; two sons, David Hingston of Chelmsford, Mass., and Robert Hingston of Falmouth, Mass.; his daughter, Lois Mumper of Lowell, Mass.; four stepsons, Jack Sullivan of Spotsylvania County, Terry Sullivan of Gordonsville, Phil Sullivan of Ruther Glen, and Mark Boswell of Marion, N.C.; his sister, Virginia Bradley of Lexington, Mass.; seven grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Esther Hingston.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Travelers Rest Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clyde Coleman and the Rev. Terrance Sullivan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
