Francis Hingston

Francis Hingston, 88, of Ruther Glen died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Hingston retired after 31 years of service with the United States Marine Corps as a chief warrant 0fficer. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis and served two tours in Vietnam.

Mr. Hingston was a deacon at Travelers Rest Baptist Church. He loved baseball, and as a young man, he worked out with the Boston Red Sox.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma L. Hingston of Ruther Glen; two sons, David Hingston of Chelmsford, Mass., and Robert Hingston and his wife, Lora, of Falmouth, Mass.; his daughter, Lois Mumper of Lowell, Mass.; four stepsons, Jack Sullivan and his wife, Linda, of Spotsylvania County, Terry Sullivan and his wife, Suzanne, of Gordonsville, Phil Sullivan and his wife, Pam of Ruther Glen, and Mark Boswell of Marion, N.C.; his sister, Virginia Bradley of Lexington, Mass.; seven grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Esther Hingston.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 at Travelers Rest Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clyde Coleman and the Rev. Terrance Sullivan officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Hingston, Jack Sullivan, Terry Sullivan, Phil Sullivan, Adam Lewis and Matthew Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Travelers Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
