Former deputy charged in jail incident Date published: 12/4/2009
BY DONNIE JOHNSTON A former Culpeper County deputy sheriff has been charged with assault and battery in connection with an "excessive force" incident at the Culpeper County jail. Daniel T. Gent, 44, of Orange County was arrested Wednesday and will make his first court appearance on Dec. 9. According to a press release issued yesterday by Sheriff Jim Branch, Gent was working as a jail deputy on Nov. 21 and was escorting a male inmate from one room to another when he allegedly "used excessive force during the transfer." Public information officer Corey Byers said that the inmate complained of a sore neck after the alleged incident but refused to go to a hospital. After an internal affairs investigation, Branch called for a criminal probe into the matter, which resulted in the assault and battery charges. Gent was released on a uniform summons. Calling it a personnel matter, Branch declined to release any further information. The sheriff refused to say whether Gent was fired or quit, only that "as a result of the internal investigation, Gent is no longer and employee of the sheriff's office." Donnie Johnston:
one less heavy handed "law enforcement" official.
