Spotsylvania High School senior Charlotte Smith has won first place in culinary contests.

She won second place in the state culinary competition, and she's darn good at handling knives.

Now the 17-year-old can add cooking with a star chef to her resume.

Smith cooked with bleached-blond, spiky-haired Food Network icon Guy Fieri, who may be best known for his show "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives."

Smith, who excels in culinary classes at Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center, was chosen by the Virginia Hospitality and Tourism Association to cook with Fieri during his "Roadshow" television series. The event was at Norfolk's Chrysler Hall on Nov. 20.

Smith said she loved the experience with Fieri. She was in charge of other culinary students who were recommended by their instructors as the best in their schools.

"He was really involved," she said about Fieri. "He is so down-to-earth and he really cares."

Edie Allyn, SCTC's assistant principal, said Smith was chosen because of her culinary-arts and leadership skills.

SCTC culinary-arts teacher Lee DeMatteo attended the event with Smith. He said that Fieri's "Roadshow" is part rock concert and part cooking show and demonstration.

Smith, who is the daughter of Suzanne and Steven Smith, said cooking runs in the family. Her dad is a regional executive chef for Sodexo, and one of her two sisters, Ariel, will attend a culinary school next year.

Her stay-at-home mom enjoys cooking healthful Portuguese food. Smith said her first cooking experience was with her mom, baking sweet bread and making green soup, which has kale and a host of other vegetables.

"It looks really nasty, but it is delicious." she said.

Smith will attend the Culinary Institute of America after graduation.
