Top picks for out-of-town activities Date published: 12/10/2009
BY PEGGY CARLSON If you are in the mood for a delightful holiday day or weekend trip, drive south and east, all the way to the Chesapeake Bay, to the town of Reedville for some delightful holiday events and activities this weekend. Anchoring the fun is the Northern Neck Railroad Annual Model Railroad Exhibit, a treat for railroad and nostalgia buffs of all ages. The exhibit features more than 100 feet of track layout and scale model structures that capture earlier days in the villages of Reedville, Heathsville, Irvington and White Stone. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children ages 12 and under are admitted free. The exhibit is open 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Jan. 10. For specific dates call 804/453-6529. On Saturday your first stop could be Breakfast with Santa in the Reedville Fisherman's Museum at 504 Main St. In coastal town style, Santa will sail up Cockrell's Creek aboard the "Elva C.," a restored 1922 buyboat, for a stop at the museum's model train exhibit, then on to Bethany United Methodist Church fellowship hall for juice and doughnuts with Santa. This event is free. A highlight of the weekend is the annual "Christmas on Cockrell's Creek" homes tour, running Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The tour features a variety of festively decorated homes, some newly built, some historic: The Morris House, 826 Main St., an elaborately detailed Queen Anne mansion. The Captain Frank Haynie House, 375 Main St., a yellow clapboard Dutch Colonial built in 1930 for Haynie, a menhaden fish boat captain. The Atwood Cottage, 428 Sutton Ave., a sophisticated cottage with a serene, contemporary look. The Pyszka Home, 361 Canvasback Drive in Ophelia, a recently built creek-side home. The Carey Home, 154 Waterside Lane, nestled between the river and a quiet cove and marsh. The Hill-Barnum Rivah House, 780 Holly Harbor Road, a modern but rustic home owned by a Marine Medal of Honor recipient and his wife. Tickets for the tours are $20 in advance, $25 on the same day and include admission to the houses, museum exhibits and model railroad show. Don't miss the Festive Holiday Tablescapes exhibit at the museum, featuring individually decorated table settings, created by the Northern Neck's most talented for a special holiday event. That exhibit is open Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For information about all activities, call 804/453-6529 or visit rfmuseum.org.
