The average people shoulder the weight
When those in public positions lost their dedication to do their jobs well, their responsibility shifted to the average people. That is why those who caused the economic crises did not help with their millions, while the average people gave billions in tax dollars. After receiving the money, loans didn't go to businesses, foreclosures did not stop, and bonuses continued. Businesses restructured to survive, but at the expense of average people's jobs through layoffs, forfeited raises, and increased production with fewer workers. As recovery was elusive, people paid more tax dollars for stimulus packages. Was this better than national programs repairing our country and putting the unemployed to work, like they did in the Great Depression? Or is it like the negligent parent who gives money to his children because it is easier than decisions and responsibility? Average people also make donations to charities created to deal with areas lacking government help, such as cures for illnesses, clean water and air, etc. Globally, donations feed starving families because their governments use income from oil, gold, and diamonds for power and personal agendas, with no concern for their people's suffering. Love of country inspires average people to sacrifice, but that example should be set by those elected and paid to protect the good of our country. They do not have the lawful or moral right to put political party or personal agendas before that good. The love of country is cited for continuing in Iraq and Afghanistan. The belief that this saves us from terrorism ignores what it adds to an obscene debt and the reality that we are selling our country into extinction. Average people have always been ready to help, but direction and guidance belongs to those who asked for the job. Now they need to do the work. Marion A. Steinbronn Spotsylvania
The "average people" should not have any responsibility, beyond voting, for "curing ills," clean water and air. We pay taxes and that should be enough to be allocated among these programs. If we get a tax refund because there was a surplus (under Clinton, with the refund under Bush), then when there is a deficit we should pay higher taxes. We spend a trillion in Iraq: Wrong! Spend it here. We should "kick the bums out." Get new mgmt by voting for new people, not the same oldsters. Let THEM take charge
