Hunter's death resulted from safety lapsesduring a grisly 'sport'

The shooting death of Ferrum College student Jessica Goode is tragic, and all the more so because it was completely avoidable ["Hunter charged in fatal shooting of Ferrum student," Nov. 19].

The man who killed Jessica didn't have a hunting license, apparently hadn't taken a hunter safety course, and didn't have permission to hunt on the property. He had no business being there.

As long as people persist in tromping through the woods armed to the teeth, accidents will happen.

In 2009, more than 50 people have been killed in hunting accidents and hundreds more injured. In Virginia alone, nine people were killed during the 2008-2009 season.

All these deaths were stupid, tragic accidents. The wounding and killing of millions of animals every year is done on purpose. Whatever the reasons behind all this mayhem, it's time to stop slaughtering animals for "fun."

A lot of suffering could be prevented if we stopped putting hunters' entertainment ahead of the safety of people and the welfare of wildlife and started seriously exploring and implementing humane methods of wildlife management that, unlike sport hunting, actually work.

if fun happens to be a byproduct of that, deal with it.

only animals. This just gives them ammunition to strike at hunters.

If PETA is interested in saving lives, perhaps they should become interested in saving the lives of human teen-agers instead of being concerned about how we obtain meat for dinner: Teenage Driver Facts: Deaths. Each Year over 5,000 teens ages 16 to 20 Die due to Fatal injuries caused Car accidents. About 400,000 drivers age 16 to 20 will be seriously injured.

grisly? (posted by Nya_nyas , Dec. 18, 2009 9:24 am)    0 likes
I agree with the writer that many accidents could be avoided if people took safety courses and hunted where they had permission; HOWEVER, I would not say that hunting is "a grisly sport." My husband is an avid hunter. He is extremly safe with his guns, has hunted since he was about 10 years old but has still taken safety courses and only hunts where he has permission. I am thankful that he has never had an accident but the chance of having an accident is something we all face everyday (driving, etc).
