The estranged wife of an Orange County sheriff's investigator continues to await a bond hearing in his shooting after the case was sent back to Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court yesterday.
Brenda Lee Canosa, who is charged with three felonies in the wounding of Investigator Bob Canosa, appeared in General District Court yesterday with her attorney, Dana Slater. As is required in domestic cases, Judge Edward Carpenter sent the case to J&DR Court, where Canosa will appear Monday.
She had appeared in J&DR court on Monday of this week, the first opportunity for her to go before a judge after her arrest Friday night. However, J&DR Judge Frank Somerville could not hear her case because a magistrate had mistakenly checked the General District Court box on the warrants for her arrest.
Her first legal appearance in J&DR court next Monday will be a preliminary hearing that could result in bail being set. Further prosecution of the case will take place in circuit court, where felonies are tried.
Canosa, 49, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Her estranged husband is recovering from multiple gunshot wounds at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. He had sur-gery on Monday and is reported to be in fair condition.
Orange County dep-uties responded to Bob Canosa's home in Unionville Friday morning, where they found their fellow officer suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation of the shooting was turned over to Virginia State Police officers from the Culpeper District Office, who obtained warrants and arrested Brenda Lee Canosa later that day. She has been held without bond, or a bond hearing, since.
Yesterday, she appeared in court in an oversize orange-and-white-striped prison jumpsuit, smiling at her two adult children sitting in the courtroom.
Brenda Lee Canosa lives in Rochelle in Madison County, where she was arrested. She is employed as a teacher's aide at Madison Primary School. She and her husband have been separated since March.
Bob Canosa, 55, has been an investigator with the Sheriff's Office in Orange since August 2007 and was previously employed by the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office from 2004-07.
