Date published: 12/18/2009

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The last weekend to shop before Christmas will be an ideal one for those who are inspired by falling snow.

A winter storm watch is in effect for tonight, and snow is expected to start sometime after 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Snow will continue Saturday and into Saturday night, said Calvin Meadows, a meteorologic technician for the weather service.

Meadows said at least 5 inches of snow are expected, but more detailed forecasts will be made later today.

The snow will be accompanied by lows in the 20s and lower 30s and winds that could gust up to 25 mph on Sunday.

Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation are prepared for full response to the winter storm, it said in a news release.

VDOT will spray anti-icing chemicals on pavements and bridges.

VDOT offered driving tips for motorists. Drivers should:

Check road conditions before they leave home by calling 511 or logging in to 511Virginia.org.

Slow down and allow for extra time to reach a destination.

Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.

Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and trucks that are plowing the road.

Do not pass a snowplow or spreader unless it is absolutely necessary.

Motorists can learn more about VDOT's winter preparedness at virginiadot.org/travel/snow.asp.

Global Warming a bunch of bunk! (posted by tpifos , Dec. 19, 2009 10:21 am)    0 likes
Obama picks another winner. I wonder if the blizzard will keep Air Force 1 from returning in time for Xmas? What a laugh. Gore should donate ALL his Global Warming millions. Scam of the century.

id like to know why the plow trucks are going by without their blades down, meanwhile theres 2 inches of snow covering 208... its extremely dangerous... its not like the storm is a fluke, they knew it was coming.

And, apparently, it hasn't snowed in (posted by ConcernedOne , Dec. 18, 2009 3:04 pm)    0 likes
Copenhagen for a number of years until now! Very funny! I read where Pelosi might have to leave early in her private jet.
