Several battles fought on Pearl Harbor Day

I was very interested in learning about the Williwaw War, an Aleutian Island World War II battle that I had not heard about ["The 'Williwaw War' defended our mainland," Dec. 7].

In remembering Pearl Harbor Day, I wanted to call attention to other battles that took place that day that are also not well-known.

Not many people know that the Japanese bombed Hong Kong, Manila, and Singapore the same day as Pearl Harbor--only it was Dec. 8, as they are on the other side of the International Date Line.

My father was caught in Hong Kong, witnessed the invasion, and dodged bombs. And when the British surrendered on Christmas Day 1941, he was subsequently interned in Stanley Prison.

Several years ago, I published his story, "Taken in Hong Kong, December 8, 1941," which is available at the Fredericksburg library, from Amazon, or at the Griffin Book Store.
