Mary Jane Cronin

M.J. Comerford Cronin, 82, of Vienna passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, after a long, hard battle with renal cancer.

She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Mary Jo and Richard Boeh ner, Daniel and Sharon Cronin, Mark and Kelly Cronin, Jim and Teresa Cronin and Sheila and Gary Wimble. She also leaves behind a sister, Anne Kelly, and a brother, John T. Comerford, as well as 12 loving grandchildren.

Ms. Cronin had retired from the federal government after more than 30 years of service. With her experience as an economist, she dedicated most of her years to working for the Department of Health and Human Services. Her position before retiring was director of planning/staff for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Children and Families.

M.J. was a very involved volunteer in her community. She gave her time to many civic organizations throughout Northern Virginia. She also served on the Vienna Town Council for one term. Before beginning a career with the federal government, Ms. Cronin devoted several years to education as a professor of economics at Trinity College and at George Washington University, both in Washington, D.C. She also attended Trinity College for her undergraduate degree in economics. She continued her education by receiving her master's degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

During her retirement, she spent time traveling the world, playing golf and taking art classes to further pursue her lifelong hobbies. She leaves behind many loving memories and a family and community that will miss her presence tremendously.

Relatives and friends are invited to M.J.'s life celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna. Interment will be held at a later date in National Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Capital Hospice or to the Cancer Society.
