Laura Miller

Laura Mae Northington Miller, 89, of Colonial Beach journeyed to a more peaceful existence on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009.

Laura was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Prattville, Ala., to the late Leslie and Fannie Northington.

Mrs. Miller was a devoted member of St. Peter's Episcopal church in Oak Grove, and a dedicated attendee of the Senior Citizen's Center in Colonial Beach.

A graduate of Autauga County High School and Massey Business College in Alabama, Mrs. Miller worked for the federal government as a secretary and stenographer for approximately 35 years at the Pentagon. She lived in the Northern Virginia area for 60 years before moving to Colonial Beach, where she had resided for the past 10 years.

Survivors include her stepdaughter, Marie Bowie and her husband, George; three grandchildren, Donna Dodd and her husband, Jimmy, Charles Bowie and his wife, Susie, and Laura Coates and her husband, Robert; 11 great-grandchildren, Chris, Lisa and Sandi Dodd, Latane Bowie, Cainon, Jordan, Leah and Karsten Coates and Buddy, Billy and Joey Gibson, all of the Colonial Beach area. She also leaves behind a sister, Patty Turner, and a brother, Mags Northington, in Alabama; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Laura was predeceased by her husband, George Francis Miller, and granddaughter Debbie B. Gibson.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Oak Grove. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, in National Memorial Park, Falls Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Peter's Cemetery Restoration Project, Box 370, Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; the American Cancer Society, c/o Sonja Gallahan, 5504 Igo Road, King George, Va. 22485; Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; or a charity of one's choice.
