Caroline supervisors taking $3,000 cut
Caroline Supervisors unanimously vote to cut their pay by 13 percent, or $3,000.

Caroline County supervisors are cutting their salaries by $3,000 a year.

The 13 percent reduction, done in part because of a new meeting schedule designed to cut costs, reduces the annual pay for each member to $19,500. Madison District Supervisor Wayne Acors raised the proposal, which was readily accepted by the entire board Tuesday.

"We had voted earlier on reducing the number of meetings we were going to hold," Acors said. "And should we have to ask our employees to take a reduction, we the board should set the tone by reducing our salaries first. If we don't have to ask them, that's fine, too."

Stafford County Supervisors voted last week to reduce their salaries by $4,500 to $20,500 a year.

The Caroline board also voted on a new meeting schedule to save more money this year.

On odd-numbered months, meetings will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays. On even-numbered months, the board will meet only on the second Tuesday.

Board members were also asked to keep the fourth Thursday open on those months in the event a work session must be called for special business.

The schedule change will save about $10,000, with the salary cuts bringing the total reduction to $25,000.

In other action, Supervisor Maxie Rozell of the Reedy Church District was elected chairman of the board. Supervisor Floyd Thomas of the Mattaponi District was elected vice chairman. Both votes were unanimous.
