School budget wins awards
School finance staff earns two national awards

Date published: 2/2/2010

The Spotsylvania County school division's finance staff took a moment from its work on the 2010-2011 school year budget last week to accept two awards for the current budget.

The School Board recognized seven staff members at last week's meeting for the national awards.

The Association of School Business Officials International gave the Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in preparing the 2009-2010 school division budget.

The Government Finance Officers Association gave the staff the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

"This is the first year the school division participated in both award programs, and I am extremely pleased to receive recognition on our budget process," Superintendent Jerry Hill said in a prepared statement. "These awards reflect the commitment of the School Board, the chief financial officer, finance and technology staff to achieve the highest standards of school budgeting, improved communication, and enhanced accountability.

"This recognition can also be viewed as positive by credit rating agencies," the statement said.

In announcing the awards, the school division said it is rare for a school system to get them the first time it submits a budget.

The seven people recognized were Chief Financial Officer LaShahn Gaines, Finance Director John Reeder, Accounting Manager Marcia Stevens, Program Analyst Rick Louderback, Administrative Assistant Brenda Rich-ardelli, Accounting Assistant Cheryl Boyd, and Clerical Assistant Doreen Flint.

The ASBO program helps school divisions build skills in crafting and presenting budgets, according to schools spokeswoman Sara Branner.

More than 1,100 governments of all sizes take part in the GFOA awards program annually, according to Branner.
