State Sen. Richard Stuart, I believe, was trying to resolve a specific problem that seems to be cropping up, generated by homeowners associations' rules and regulations ["Bill may help flag fliers," Jan. 15].
Some have indicated that Sen. Stuart's effort was not necessary because the First Amendment already protects the flying of any flag.
People have also asked why we single out the right to fly only the American flag.
However, there are times that a particular situation in society needs attention and must be singled out regarding the governance of people. This seems like one of those times.
It's very likely that a number of homeowners associations throughout the commonwealth will benefit from the bill's clarification regarding the people's right to free expression and speech by flying "Old Glory."
Sen. Stuart has taken an additional action by introducing a bill to shore up the people's right to fly the U.S. flag.
Many will argue that the action was not necessary, but I imagine that many HOAs will find it helpful--whether they are flag fliers or not.
I, along with a contingent of veterans, surely appreciate Sen. Stuart's patriotic effort on this matter.
