WITH Valen-
I could do the cheesy middle-school cards with the cartoon animals--or I could go to a store and get my dad a tie, my mom a mug, just like every other desperately confused person out there. However, nothing I could think of seemed to impart the feeling that I really cared for them and wanted them to know it.
During the holiday season, many people feel like it is crunch time to find the perfect gift for that special someone. However, instead of paying $40 for something that you aren't even sure he or she will like, why not try to give something different--something little, but something that leaves no doubt that you love them and want them to have a good day.
If you find yourself with nothing to do, instead of staring at a TV for a good solid three hours, go on a surprise visit to someone. Show up at the doorstep with a plate of cookies or a flower, and wait for the smile to bloom on their face. That smile makes it worth it, every time.
Instead of sending a mass text, write a note to every person that you care about, telling them why they are important to you, and seal it with a hug and a kiss. Whether they receive it in person or by mail, this is a sweet tradition that has, unfortunately, been forgotten over time.
Smile at everyone you recognize today, instead of just your close friends. This could end up letting you talk to someone you haven't spoken to in years--something that is truly part of the holiday experience. Instead of talking about how much you hate your teachers or want to go home, or how it's too cold outside, give them a sincere compliment. A little more love in the world in place of something negative never hurt anyone!
Looking at bathroom graffiti, with the scrawlings of who sucks or who is hot, I always feel like they need
When experimenting with some of these, I had one of the best nights in several weeks. I visited a close friend to deliver brownies, and ended up getting to meet her entire family. Remembering this still puts a smile on my face, and I wouldn't give that up for another hour of Facebook or TV any day.
Luckily, these ideas don't have to be confined to a holiday or celebration. Every day is an opportunity for you to pass on a smile and get one in return.
