Filing deadline approaches for local races Date published: 2/9/2010
BY EMILY BATTLE
Potential candidates for Fredericksburg City Council and School Board seats in the May 4 elections have three weeks left to file for candidacy with the city registrar. The four ward seats on the council and School Board are up for election this year. On the City Council, Ward 1 Councilman Brad Ellis and Ward 2 Councilman George Solley have both said they'll seek another term. Solley will be seeking his second term, and Ellis will be seeking his first full term, after being appointed to fill the remaining portion of Marvin Dixon's term in the summer of 2008. In Ward 3, Councilman Matt Kelly has said since the last election that he will not run again. No new candidates have surfaced in that ward. In Ward 4, Councilman Hashmel Turner said last week that he is leaning toward not running, but he wants to find a candidate to run in his place before he makes his decision final. On the School Board, Ward 1 board member Pat Green and Ward 3 member Janice Walsh have both said they will seek another term. Ward 2 representative Barbara Miller-Richards and Ward 4 representative Malvina Rollins Kay could not be reached for comment last week. To be eligible to run, potential candidates have to collect 125 signatures from registered voters in their districts. They must file these petitions, along with all other candidacy forms, with the city registrar by 7 p.m. March 2. April 12 is the last day to register to vote in the May 4 election.
