Joan Thompson Howell

Joan Thompson Howell, 93, of Spotsylvania County joyously reunited with her beloved husband, Tyrus J. Howell, on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.

Joan was born in Washington, D.C., a fourth-generation Washingtonian, to Isabelle Atkinson and Clinton Rand Thompson.

Joan was a longtime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Stafford County. Joan and Ty had a passion for visiting countries such as China, India and those in Europe. She loved her friends, sewing, chocolate, playing bridge and her cats. Joan was also an avid family historian.

She was preceded in death by a son, Tommy; a daughter, Joan; her husband of 62 years, Tyrus J. Howell; and two brothers, Franklin and Paul Thompson.

Joan is survived by her daughter Jean Eiland of Marlboro, Mass.; and three sons, Terry Howell of Phoenix, Ty Howell of Davie, Fla., and Trent J. Howell of Fredericksburg.

She is also survived by four grandchildren, Denise Dunn, Rick Eiland, Tommy Howell and Nathan Howell; and five great-grandchildren, Kelsey Dunn, Holly Dunn, Turner Eiland, Leo Eiland and Gracie Eiland, who all affectionately called her "G.G.MA."

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Frederick Donahoe officiating. Interment will follow at National Memorial Park in Falls Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Mary Washington Hospital Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407, or the American Heart Association.
