Redskins cornerback Byron Westbrook was arrested in Maryland early yesterday morning on several charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

An officer spotted his car around 2 a.m. crossing the lane markings several times near the intersection of Route 5 and Lakewood Place in Waldorf, a spokesman for the Charles County Sheriff's Department said.

Westbrook failed multiple sobriety tests and was subsequently charged with DUI, DWI, negligent driving and failure to drive right of center.

He was released on his own recognizance. A court date has not yet been set.

"We take these issues very seriously," Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said in a statement released by the team. "Moving forward, we plan to meet with Byron and will continue to monitor the situation."

Westbrook played in 15 games this season, his first NFL game action after spending 2007 and 2008 on the Redskins' practice squad. He's the younger brother of Philadelphia Eagles star running back Brian Westbrook.

Westbrook, 25, is the second Redskin to make a sour impression on the new regime with an alcohol-related arrest this offseason. Guard Chad Rinehart was arrested for public intoxication last month in Iowa after a police officer spotted him trying to get into a locked pizza parlor.
