Movies still playing in the Fredericksburg area Date published: 3/11/2010
HH "COP OUT" (R) Though Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan create a few funny moments in what's supposed to be a buddy comedy, this is a juvenile jumble that could have been much better. Director Kevin Smith ("Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back") makes this less a movie and more a mishmash of comedy and murder that doesn't make much sense. Rated R for pervasive language including sexual references, violence and brief sexuality. 110 min. [RF, RA, M] H "THE CRAZIES" (R) It's a tribute to the talent of Timothy Olyphant that he manages to not embarrass himself playing an Iowa sheriff in this forgettable film. One minute, people are fine; the next, they're hacking people up and setting their families on fire. Why and how all this happens is mildly interesting until government troops in gas masks swoop in to kill and carry off the townspeople. By then, you hardly will care. Rated R for bloody violence, language. 90 min. [RA] HH "PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF" (PG) It's hard not to compare this to the "Harry Potter" franchise, as it has the full mythology, handsome young stars and special effects that have the young heroes battling strange beings. The difference: Here, it's not done quite as well, and it's aimed at a younger audience. That's tricky, because there's enough violence and pain to scare very young viewers. And yet those who've read the books about the earthbound demigod sons and daughters of Greek gods will find this a big event. Rated PG for action violence and peril, some scary images and suggestive material, and mild language. 120 min. [RF, RA] HH "SHUTTER ISLAND" (R) You can paint a film with all the Hitchcock-esque details you can think of. But unless your story is scary, your conflict gripping or your characters fascinating, you're going nowhere. For a brief time at the start, the dark and dreary film pulls you in to follow Leonardo DiCaprio's federal marshal onto a prison island to investigate a prisoner's escape. But it loses traction as we follow the investigation through an uninteresting maze of missing prisoners, odd treatments and jailhouse doctors with links to concentration camps the marshal has flashbacks about from the war. Rated R for some sexual material and brief partial nudity. 90 min. [RF, RA, M] HH "VALENTINE'S DAY" (PG-13) Though this is a slight film, a collection of more than a dozen lovers and events on Valentine's Day, its intertwined tales featuring a huge cast come together in a way that sticks with you. Ashton Kutcher may not be a great character actor, but as the goofy owner of a florist shop who finds rejection and then redemption, he's solid enough to carry the center of the film. Jennifer Garner is up to the task of playing his best friend, who just may be more. Rated PG-13 for some sexual material and brief partial nudity. 90 min. [M]
