On health care, the GOP is disingenuous

The GOP campaign against health care reform is linguistically clever, but scientifically flawed.

Almost every Republican opponent to health care I have heard speak says, "Polls say this is something the American people don't want."

What they do not say is that the polls use propaganda and emotionally tinged terms such as "government and socialist controlled health care."

Any poll that asks questions about the details of the reform find that the American people are overwhelmingly for the specifics of this bill.

Much is made of the size of the bill. Bills are purposely double- or triple-spaced and pages have large margins so legislators can mark them up as they study them.

I would not want legislation of this magnitude to not have complexities. The opponents know this and like the stage dressing of stacking up the printed paperwork.

Another cliche is that this is being "rammed through" without sufficient discussion.

Nonsense. Republicans have had ample time to make their presentations. Their suggestions have been incorporated in the bill or lost in the give-and-take of legitimate legislative discourse.

The same emotional arguments have been made before. Ronald Reagan believed Medicare was socialist and would break the bank; he campaigned against Medicare.

Ironically, the tea party advocates want the government to keep their hands off Medicare. What an oxymoron!

The Republican Party is apparently being led by Sen. Jim DeMint, who makes no bones about opposition to health care reform being the best way to defeat President Obama in 2012.

Any time a party uniformly opposes legislation, I will question its honesty and sincerity.

It is time to pass health care and move on with the business of government.
