UMW reaffirms non-discrimination policy Date published: 3/18/2010
BY JEFF BRANSCOME
The University of Mary Washington yesterday reaffirmed its nearly 20-year-old anti-discrimination policy, which includes sexual orientation. The executive committee of the board of visitors voted to "continue to support the principles expressed" in the policy approved May 1991. "I think our students need to know that we stand behind these principles," UMW Rector Nanalou Sauder said yesterday. Executive Vice President Rick Hurley added: "It's equally important to the staff." Earlier this month, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli told colleges and universities that they don't have the authority to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. The issue arose after Gov. Robert McDonnell issued an executive order barring work McDonnell says that it's up to the General Assembly to change the law that defines what classes of people are protected under the state's human rights act. Last week, he issued an executive directive saying he does not condone discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or anything else. The directive isn't legally binding. it's a sea of vanilla...
The issue is not that you have to agree with the alternative lifestyle; you just cannot discriminate based on those beliefs. Also, Jaes, ever taken a stroll down campus? It's pretty difficult to say they use racial "preference" in their enrollment or hiring practices...
The US Constitutions's protection against discrimination only applies to people who have been discriminated against and discriminating against the discriminator's group is allowed as long as it is the same kind of discrimination since that wrong then rights the initial wrong. Alles Klar Herr Kommissar?
the college doesn't discriminate in hiring or enrollment, yet it uses racial preferencing for both? Is somebody eating stupid pills?
..then what relevance or role does Federal Law play in Virginia Law that remains silent as to other kinds of discrimination, without the protections of LAW? Otherwise, those being discriminated agains in Virginiat because of their sexual orientation, do have a leg to stand on. Does the religious body then become Governor McDonnell's "rational basis" to deny someone protection under the law as well as his directives' chosen words which only raise a rebuttable presumption to first and one on the one yard line
