Locals opposed to reform proposal
Fredericksburg congressional delegation against health care bill

Date published: 3/21/2010

BY EMILY BATTLE

There isn't any question where the Fredericksburg area's congressional delegation stands on the health care vote Democrats are pushing for today.

In statements on the House floor last week, both Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Montross, and House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, R-Henrico, said they were hearing from constituents that they don't think the proposal on the table will provide the reform that is needed, and that it is being rammed through too quickly.

"I am hearing loud and clear from people of America's first district in Vir-ginia that this health care bill before us will not reduce costs, will not increase access," Wittman said on Tuesday. "It is full of sweetheart, backroom deals that they find highly objectionable, and that now we are proposing to put this bill through without having to directly vote on the bill. That also makes them mad."

Cantor also took to the floor last week.

"The majority seems committed to trying to muscle through a trillion-dollar overhaul that will change health care for every man, woman and child," Cantor said in his remarks.

"Americans have made it very clear, they don't like this bill. They don't want the government in the decision-making of their health care. They want to lower costs, and they don't want their government tax dollars going to fund abortion services. So why can't we start over, Madam Speaker?"

This article shows no awareness that this region's congressional (as in Congress) delegation includes two U.S. senators whose views are properly part of the coverage of this issue. And there is no news value whatsoever in the fact that Kantor and Wittman oppose health-care reform. The most disturbing aspect of performances like that is that the responsible editors allow them to happen.

Get real..I am simply pointing out that the hated, rotten insurance companies were just handed billions of additionl dollars in profits by these legislators. It looks a if the millions of dollars their bribery speciualists distributed on capitol hill are paying off big. Nobody is getting any additional benefits...all the poor people already have medicaid so what was accomplished except cause tax increases too pay the insurers for "grudgingly accepting 39 million new customers shoved their way by the truth
