Things will definitely be hopping in the area this Saturday, as the Easter Bunny makes his rounds with a bevy of pre-holiday activities for children.
One long-standing tradition is the annual Eggsplosion, hosted by Stafford County's Department of Parks and Recreation at Curtis Park, now in its 22nd year and packed with activities--including pony rides, four different inflatable amusements, entertainment and a visit from the Easter Bunny and the park's own Curtis the Beaver.
The highlight of the day will be a giant Easter egg hunt, staged in sessions with different age groups, beginning at 11:30 a.m. with ages 2 and under, and going through to 2 p.m. with ages 8 through 10.
"The best part of this event is that I just say, 'Go!' and then get out of the way," said recreation programmer Derrick Carr. "This is a truly fun springtime celebration: Happiness abounds. The 3- 4- year-olds and the 5- 7- year-olds cover the ground like a vacuum--if you blink, you missed the egg hunt."
Attendance at the celebration has been steadily growing throughout the years, and last year it attracted 850 participants. The first 500 boys and girls through the gate will receive a bucket to hold the eggs. (Those running late may want to bring their own basket or bag.)
All children will receive a prize when they turn in their eggs at the information booth.
Refreshments including pizza, ice cream, kettle corn and candy will be available for purchase throughout the day, and entertainment by Super Vaudevillian Mark Lohr will be featured at 12:30 pm.
In addition to the Eggsplosion, Stafford County will be hosting activities for children next Monday, beginning with a Preschool Easter Egg Hunt in the morning exclusively for ages 5 and under.
Participants will gather to sing "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" to attract the Easter Bunny, who will lead the group to the field where the hunt will begin. They will also have a chance to visit with the bunny and have their photos taken with him.
Monday's activities will also feature an Easter Crafts for Kids session for kids, which will include creating a chick painting from a yellow hand-print decorated with feathers and googly eyes.
