Governor shares Memorial Day message in Fredericksburg

Date published: 6/1/2010

BY EMILY BATTLE

Gov. Bob McDonnell thanked the more than 400 people who came to Fredericksburg National Cemetery for yesterday's Memorial Day observance for taking a break from swimming pool trips, cookouts and parties to remember why many Americans had the day off work in the first place.

"It has been the blood, sweat and tears of our American men and women in uniform that have always preserved our freedom," McDonnell said. "Thank you for not taking that for granted."

The governor's appearance capped off a busy weekend at Fredericksburg National Cemetery. Park Superintendent Russ Smith said 4,000 people came to the luminaria event on Saturday.

Yesterday, most visitors pulled chairs from the ring around the speaker's podium into shady spots under trees to escape the day's 90-degree temperatures.

McDonnell told them that recognizing the service of veterans who have given their lives is important not only as a way to honor the past, but also as a way to make sure future generations will be willing to serve.

"If we do not salute our veterans, how, then, are we going to recruit the next generation of men and women to wear the uniform?" the governor asked.

McDonnell mentioned that a ceremony at the state Capitol earlier last week honored the 206 Virginians who have died in the war on terror in the past decade.

He pointed out that 75 percent of the Virginia National Guard has been called up to active duty during that time, and that Guard members have given their lives in the struggle.

"Today, as you enjoy this time with your families, remind them that it is because of those that we honor today that they have and you have the chance to enjoy such an incredible nation," McDonnell said.

He then asked that people not forget to honor veterans beyond Memorial Day.

"When you see a veteran, tomorrow, or the next day, go out of your way to thank them," McDonnell said. "If you do that, in some small way you will honor the sacrifices that those in the line of duty have given over the years."
