Spotsylvania teen dies in auto accident

A 17-year-old girl was killed in a one-vehicle crash early yesterday morning near Lake Anna.

The crash happened about 1:20 a.m. on Stubbs Bridge Road in Spotsylvania about a half mile south of Dovey Road, said state police Sgt. F.L. Tyler.

The driver of a 2004 Toyota Tacoma was driving north on Stubbs Bridge when he ran off the right side of the road, Tyler said. He overcorrected, and the vehicle overturned.

Chelsea Herring, a passenger in the truck, was partially ejected. She was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:02 a.m.

Caroline High School Principal Harper Donahoe confirmed today that she was an 11th grade student there and a member of the school's softball team.

The driver, Herring's father, Barbour Franklin Herring III, 45, of Spotsylvania, was transported to Mary Washington Hospital. Tyler did not know how severe the driver's injuries were or whether he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Trooper F.G. Childs investigated the accident. No charges will be filed against the driver, Tyler said.

To everyone I'm sure Chelsea's dad is having a hard enough time dealing with this as it is without you people attempting to be judge and jury! He will be punished enough without being able to see her grow old, this man loves his children! I worked with one of Chelsea's sisters for years and know he adored his kids! Mistakes happen, please make sure your loved ones (young & old) are buckled up! My heart goes out to you guys Whitney, Lov ya Sherry

and should be a lesson to other parents...make sure your kid is wearing a seatbelt. kids think their parents will protect them no matter what but accidents happen and even the best dads arent bullet proof,

This is a tragic accident and I don't really feel it is necessary for everyone to point out how her father should have made her wear a seat belt like he does not already feel responsible. Most of us have run off the road a time or 2, and people who know anything about the Toyota Tundra they were in would know this specific typoe of truck expecially in years from 00-05 have a tendency to roll over. I would almost be willing to bet that if they were in a different type of vehicle the outcome would be diff.

What if for a moment she was alive and was trying to get out to go get help.....My thoughts and prayers go out to the families at this most difficult time. R I P Chelsea
