I-95 crash injuries prove fatal
University of Chicago student dies following Saturday night crash on I-95 in Stafford

Date published: 6/30/2010

BY KELLY HANNON

A 21-year-old Charlottesville man has died following a Saturday night crash in Stafford on Interstate 95.

Ian Woo Cumings, 21, died Sunday evening at Mary Washington Hospital, said Sgt. F.L. Tyler, Virginia State Police spokesman.

State police were notified of the death Tuesday afternoon, Tyler said.

Cumings was a rising fourth-year student at The University of Chicago, according to the university's student newspaper, the Chicago Maroon.

Cumings was driving a 2000 Mercedes-Benz E320 sedan south on I-95, and had pulled onto the interstate's right shoulder 1.5 miles south of State Route 610, according to state police.

Around 10:20 p.m. Cumings attempted to merge back onto I-95, and pulled in front of a tractor-trailer, according to state police.

The tractor-trailer then swerved into the center lane, striking a charter bus. The charter bus swerved into the left lane, striking a 2008 Nissan Maxima, police said.

The Mercedes ran off the right side of I-95, crashed through a guardrail and burst into flames, police said.

Cumings and his passenger, Shane Hunter Coughlan, 20, were taken to Mary Washington Hospital. Coughlan is a rising third-year student at The University of Chicago, according to the Chicago Maroon, where he also worked as a newspaper photographer.

Coughlan is still receiving treatment at Mary Washington Hospital, according to state police.

Cumings' mother is Meredith Jung-En Woo, dean of the University of Virginia's College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and his father is Bruce Cumings, head of the history department at The University of Chicago, according to a 2008 U.Va. news release.

My deepest condolences and sympathy to Dean Woo and Dr. Cumings. A staggering loss that defies emotional or intellectual comprehension. May it serve as a reminder that when you see someone on the shoulder, move out of the adjacent lane and give them room to re-enter. The Virginia ?move over? law has expanded to require drivers to move over for tow trucks & others with flashing amber lights, not just police. Please move over for all vehicles! My prayers are with both families & for Shane Coughlan's recovery
