Dr. Thomas Stacy Lloyd Jr. died at Marian Manor in Stafford County on Tuesday, July 13, 2010. He was 84 years old.
Dr. Lloyd was born in 1925 in Richmond to the late Thomas Stacy Lloyd and Helen Briel Lloyd. After graduation from high school at 16, he attended the University of Richmond and graduated from The Medical College of Virginia at age 22.
He did his internship and residency in New Orleans at Southern Baptist Hospital. In between his medical studies, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, and was called to active duty during the Korean War as a battalion surgeon with the 300th Armored Field Artillery, The Cowboy Cannoneers from Wyoming. He attended to the wounded before they went to M.A.S.H., and he was awarded The Bronze Star.
After he finished his military obligations at Fort Myers as a captain in the Army, he returned to New Orleans to finish his medical training.
He moved to Fredericksburg in 1954 with his former wife, Jane (now deceased), and two children, Paula Jean and Scott Lloyd. His second son, Philip Briel Lloyd was born in Fredericksburg. He was the third OB in the area and the first OB-GYN at the Pratt Medical Center (at that time, The Pratt Clinic).
He established a busy and well-respected OB-GYN practice, bringing into the community many fine OB-GYN physicians: Dr. Clement Robbins, Dr. Donald Stoker, Dr. Frank Durcan, Dr. Tom Tomzak, Dr. Douglas Meyer and Dr. Patricia Murray. During his medical career spanning 50 years, he delivered over 8,000 babies.
He always said, that "There's a tremendous gratification to being part of something that has been built up in people's hearts for nine months."
He was also the first physician in the area to introduce ultrasound in his OB-GYN practice.
During his medical career, he published over 20 articles in medical journals. He was past president of Fredericksburg Area Medical Society, and a member of the Medical Society of Virginia. He was a Fellow of The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a diplomat in The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a member of The Southern Medical Association and the American Fertility Society.
Dr. Lloyd was also past chairman of the Department of OB-GYN at Mary Washington Hospital, and past chairman of the medical records and tissue committees.
Dr. Lloyd was appointed by the governor of the state of Virginia to serve on the medical malpractice review panels of the Supreme Court of Virginia. He was also a past medical advisor to the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad and The American Cancer Society.
He was founder and principal contributor to a health and medicine column in The Free Lance-Star for several years. He retired from medical practice in 1998.
Dr. Lloyd became very active in the city of Fredericksburg, which he loved. He served on the Fredericksburg Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors for six years, and president for two years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, beginning in 1955 with a Legion of Merit Citizenship Award.
Dr. Lloyd was a city councilman for 18 years total.
He served on the education committee because, to Dr. Lloyd, education was the key to the future of all children. He also served on the Public Interest Committee and was part of many crucial issues affecting the city, including busing and annexation.
After leaving the council, he established the Memorial Advisory Committee and was chairman for many years, serving the city for another 18 years.
Lloyd Lane in Braehead Woods was named in his honor.
In 1974, he married his wife, Marilyn, and they were devoted to each other for 36 years next month. Their children are William Stacy, born in 1976, and Holly Marilyn, born in 1977.
Dr. Lloyd was a musician and music composer, writing a symphony, a cantata, a hymn and a love song for his wife, Marilyn. He enjoyed writing and he also kept in contact with many syndicated columnists because of his interest in the etymology of words.
Throughout their marriage, he and his wife, Marilyn, shared a love of travel, film and adopting rescued dogs and cats. After his retirement, Dr. Lloyd and his wife enjoyed the love of family and grandchildren, numbering 12 plus. They all called him "Opa."
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his daughter, Paula Jean Parker, and longtime friend Patti Williams; Paula's sons, Stephen Parker and Gregory Parker; Stephen's wife, Lisa, and their two children, Rowan and Zoe.
He is survived by a son, retired Army Col. Thomas Scott Lloyd, his wife, Cathy, and his children, Matthew Lloyd, Matt's wife, Beth, and Scott's daughter, Jessica. He is also survived by his son Philip Lloyd, his wife, Gina, and their four children, Sarah, Thomas, Andrew and Zachary.
