Sports fees will hurt latchkey kids
Date published: 7/30/2010 Sports fees will hurt latchkey kids I read the July 22 article titled "Spotsy sports fees are coming." Who do the officials think they are kidding when they say that it is doubtful that this fee will keep kids from playing? Do they not remember what happened last year when they cut the activity buses? I know that Spotsylvania High School had to hold a second tryout for football just to get enough kids to play. Now they want to charge parents $100 per child per sport? Do they not realize we are in a recession? Not only is this going to lower the number of kids who can play, but I'm willing to bet it will also cause a rise in teen violence, drug use, and pregnancy. Here's why: How many of our kids today are latchkey kids? How many parents are working two or three jobs just to make ends meet? These are the kids who will be hurt by this. If we can't provide our kids with something constructive like sports, they will find something to do with their time, and more often than not it is something negative. It won't hurt wealthy families or the kids whose parents get welfare (they'll get a free ride to play). The ones who will be hurt are those who have hardworking parents who are lucky to scrape the money together for school supplies and new clothes. In case the school officials have failed to notice, those are the families that make up the majority I find it hard to believe that this is the best way Tiffany Morkovsky Spotsylvania

When you were young paid a cover charge to a club to flirt, mingle and get some jingle does the club owe you some schnooky because you paid them a cover charge? Just like then if you were good enough you got to play the game and score and if your kid is good enough he will also get a chance play the game and score. Possibly some of you should protest and not partake and when participation is down they cancel the entire sports program and save the money we are spending for your brat to play sports.
playing time has not been addressed

I hope the school board would address minimum guarenteed playing time for students that pay to play. The economy is hard right now for everyone. I would rather spend my 100.00 on something else if my child will sit the bench most of the time.

It looks ,or sounds, like you didn't go to high school !!!! Nice English !!!! (spelling)
Actually they do care. Sounds like they are trying to figure out a way to pay for these activities because of the depression..
Hey kids! Go earn your own damn money for sports!

Yeah, you heard me right. Quit buying $$$ drinks & stuff. If
you want it you'll find a way to get it. I home(d) school my
child(ren) so I donate a lot to your kids already. Years ago I
complained that kids got a trophy for showing up in a
uniform. The "all about my kid" generation is still crying.
Hello, Make THEM work for it. No one should play free of
charge. Whatever happened to, "We just can't afford it, kid"
I heard that growing up & it just made me a hard worker.
Crybabies,

you make a good point - has it been addressed at all how this will effect who gets to actually "play". Being on the team and sitting the bench seems unacceptable now if the county wants parents to pay. I too have no problem footing the bill for my children, but pay to play should guarantee actual playing time for everyone - just like in little league where, by the way, I was responsible for the activity fee plus needed uniform and equipment.
