I read the July 22 article titled "Spotsy sports fees are coming." Who do the officials think they are kidding when they say that it is doubtful that this fee will keep kids from playing?
Do they not remember what happened last year when they cut the activity buses? I know that Spotsylvania High School had to hold a second tryout for football just to get enough kids to play. Now they want to charge parents $100 per child per sport? Do they not realize we are in a recession?
Not only is this going to lower the number of kids who can play, but I'm willing to bet it will also cause a rise in teen violence, drug use, and pregnancy.
Here's why: How many of our kids today are latchkey kids? How many parents are working two or three jobs just to make ends meet? These are the kids who will be hurt by this.
If we can't provide our kids with something constructive like sports, they will find something to do with their time, and more often than not it is something negative.
It won't hurt wealthy families or the kids whose parents get welfare (they'll get a free ride to play). The ones who will be hurt are those who have hardworking parents who are lucky to scrape the money together for school supplies and new clothes. In case the school officials have failed to notice, those are the families that make up the majority
I find it hard to believe that this is the best way
