A Charlottesville couple died late Saturday afternoon on State Route 20 in the Somerset area of Orange County near Scuffletown Road (State Route 609) and Old Somerset Road (State Route 668), state police said.

Dale Ray Parrott, 64, and Shirley Ann Parrott, 58, of Charlottesville were traveling south on Route 20 in their 2000 Ford Explorer.

They died at the scene of the accident from injuries sustained in the crash.

Mildred Sue Ferguson, 58, of Orange was driving north on Route 20, state police said. Her 1995 Jeep Cherokee crossed the center line, causing the Parrotts' vehicle to spin sideways into the northbound lane.

The Parrotts' vehicle was then struck in the passenger side by a 2004 Land Rover Freelander driven by Darryle R. Crump, 61, of Orange. Joan Ann Crump, 64, was a passenger in the Land Rover.

Ferguson and the Crumps were transported to University of Virginia Medical Center. No information was available on their conditions.

The accident was reported at 5:05 p.m., and Route 20 was closed until late Saturday night. Orange County sheriff's deputies, Orange County Fire and Rescue and the Virginia State Police responded to the scene.

According to state police spokesman Sgt. Les Tyler, Trooper B.J. Hobbs is investigating the incident with the assistance of the state police crash reconstruction team.
