Caroline shooters score well in national competition Date published: 8/8/2010
Two Caroline County students made it to the winners' podium in a recent competition known as the "Little League World Series of Shooting Sports." Chris Smith of Caroline is a member of the Charity Hill Claybusters, which won the sporting clays division of the the Scholastic Clay Target Program national competition for the third year in a row. The team posted a score of 552 out of a possible 600. The Claybusters also won first place in the High All-Around competition, which is based on a team's average scores in all divisions. It scored 842 out of a possible 900. Smith graduated from Caroline High School this year and will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall. Andrew Napier, a rising junior at Caroline High School, is a member of the Conservation Park Rebels. The team finished in third place in the High All-Around competition with a score of 826. The SCTP target-shooting competition is is held over four days in Sparta, Ill., each July. It has three separate events: sporting clays, trap, and skeet. The program provides students in grades 12 and under the opportunity to learn and showcase their competitive shooting skills while earning state and national recognition. It is designed to instill safe firearms handling, commitment, academic accomplishment, responsibility, leadership, community service and teamwork. --Staff reports
