Three-car crash on Interstate 95 southbound in Stafford kills child
Date published: 8/17/2010
A 9-year-old boy was killed and several others injured in a three-car crash on Interstate 95 yesterday.
The boy, Steven Joseph Petillo, of Floral Park, N.Y., died at the scene of the 10:30 a.m., crash south of the Aquia-Garrisonsville exit, State Police Sgt. F.L. Tyler said.
The victim was a passenger in a Chevrolet van with his parents, Michael and Maria Petillo, both 41, and two other children.
The accident occurred when a pickup truck driven by Araz Norrie Rashed, 55, of Dumfries was traveling in the left southbound lane when it struck the right rear of an Acura driven by Carolyn Dickenson, 40, of Stafford, Tyler said.
The pickup then went into the center lane, Tyler said, striking the van and sending it out of control down an embankment.
It overturned with the family trapped inside, according to Stafford Fire and Rescue officials.
The rescue units extricated the trapped victims.
The family members were taken to Mary Washington Hospital, but their conditions were not available last night.
Dickenson and Rashed were treated and released at the Stafford Hospital Center, Tyler said.
Everyone was wearing a seat belt, Tyler said.
Tyler said the crash is under investigation by Trooper M.A. Oliver and the State Police Crash Reconstruction Team. Tyler said the Stafford Sheriff's Office, VDOT and Stafford Fire and Rescue were also involved in the investigation.
