Rockhill Elementary

Luis Rovira and Sam Lichtman won first and second place, respectively, in their age groups in the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center's art contest, "America, a Land of Many Peoples." Their artwork was submitted by Ann Cobb, their fifth-grade teacher. Their artwork is on display at the museum.

The following are new staff members: Reading Specialist, Daphne Dudek, fifth grade; Penny Jones, counselor; Barbara Vorndick, diagnostician; Maribeth Veal, psychologist; Becky McGuire, preschool teacher; paraprofessionals Debbie Delaney, Lori Montemayor, Alesha Napier, Colette Reid, Theresa Sampson and Dana Woolson; and Stacey Anderson, cafeteria hostess.

The annual Evening Open House will be held Sept. 2, with last names, A-L at 5:30 p.m., kindergarten orientation at 5:45 p.m.; last names M-Z at 6:30 p.m. with kindergarten orientation at 6:45 p.m.

Families can meet teachers, join the PTO and receive school calendars, purchase school supply packets and school tee-shirts, put money in lunch/breakfast accounts, and find out bus route information. All families are encouraged to attend. Class lists will be posted at 5:30 p.m.

The PTO is selling school supply packets for the upcoming school year.

Order forms are available on the school web site and in the school office.

Stafford High

Stafford High School will host a Link Crew Freshman Orientation Program on Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students should arrive early. The event will start at 8 am. Enter the school through the main lobby in the front of the building. Initially please report to the auditorium; the event itself will begin in the gymnasium. At 7:55, the freshman will be sent to the gymnasium. This event is for freshman only. The purpose of this orientation is to make the transition from middle school to high school a positive one. Seniors and juniors will be serving as leaders and mentors to the freshman. Large and small group activities are designed to address students needs and concerns in an enjoyable manner. Students should wear comfortable clothes that follow the dress code. A separate event will be Aug. 31. held for any upper-class students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) new to the school. At the same time on Friday, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the school will host a Freshman Parent Informational Meeting in the auditorium, with teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators.

There will be a Meet and Greet event Aug. 31 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria, prior to the open house event from 5 to 7 p.m. for any upper-class students who are new to Stafford High School. The 2010 yearbook, the Indian Legend, earned a National Scholastic Press Association All American rating. This is the highest rating awarded to a high school yearbook in the USA. The yearbook earned marks of distinction in all categories except writing and editing. The yearbook adviser is Linda Keefer.

The Smoke Signal student newspaper earned a Second Class award from National Scholastic Press Association. Sue Gill is the adviser.
