New motto: 'Virginia Loves Criminals' Date published: 8/26/2010
What is happening to our judicial system?
A 19-year-old driving at a high rate of speed slams into the vehicle of a 65-year-old male, destroying the man's leg from the knee to the foot. The kid (with his lawyer in tow) manages to convince the trooper and the judge to reduce his charge to an infraction resulting in nothing more than $211 in fines and court costs, while the victim spent an entire month in the hospital, endured five surgeries, and is now home, with his knee, leg, and ankle held together with a metal contraption. He's facing extensive therapy in the hopes of regaining the ability to walk. His life has been forever changed because of the negligence of this kid. The irony: This kid "walks away." A 40-year-old woman embezzles more than $10,000 from a local nonprofit organization and receives no incarceration. She stole funds donated to help those in need. A 40-year-old man commits an egregious crime, receives only six months in the "Rappahannock Hilton." The court reduces his child support order by more than half. He breaks his probation; the court dismisses the charge. He sails the waters in his "hidden asset" knowing that he will never be held accountable for his child support arrearage of close to $10,000 or be ordered to pay his fair share of child support. The man managed to have his child support reduced by virtue of his crime. He, in essence, walks away not only from his crime, but also from the support of his child. It goes on and on. Our judicial system is a disgrace. It's nothing more than a cesspool. Our slogan needs to be changed from "Virginia is for Lovers" to "Virginia Loves Criminals." Those in our judicial system who help fill the cesspool should hang their heads in shame. Carroll Carr Jordan Spotsylvania
In the case I was talking about,I went to the trial. It wasn't listening to rumors. Recurring articles w/criminals who received reduced sentences only to get out & commit again. It's not only the Fred'bg area; it's everywhere. The 2X convicted drunk gets his license back & kills in a crash while driving drunk. The stabber who gets out & stabs again. The pedophile who served a couple of yrs, released & raped another child. The murderers w/long criminal history who kill again.
subject of this article. If that is what this person got, then there must have been some mitigating factors. My experience with the court system is that they are usually too harsh. Everyone makes mistakes and is entitled to a fair trial, not trial by mob who is angry because a friend of a friend says someone committed murder. It sounds more like involuntary manslaughter by the punishment. My mother was shot in the head so I have experienced this pain. That's why we need "neutral" court to be fair if possible
During trial, because it was considered unrelated, the jury was not allowed to hear about the multiple criminal traffic offenses committed, a history of warrants in debt, the anger counseling, etc. That person will be out in less than 10 yrs. Why? Because of no criminal history. Because so many people talked about the "good" in this person & that this was a "mistake". Restart? What about the person who is dead? And you want to turn this person loose? So the next murder send to jail for a long time??
The Judges and Prosecutors know what they are doing. When they give a person a second chance they are helping society to further itself through compassion for people who may be having difficulties we do not understand that cause them to do things out of character like committing a crime. Sometimes a crime is a mistake due to stress or inability to make enough money to take care of your family. Give the courts a break, when they help someone restart their life remember that might be you one day. Ease up.
Dean it may cost less to educate a child then it does to incarcerate them as adults but that does not mean excuse them and give them a slap on the wrist if they commit a crime. Its all about the money and there is always the plea bargain. Our safety does not really matter in the eyes of the law. I mean you would go to jail for up to 20 years if you steal gas but molest a child well that is 5 Our priorities are in the wrong place money talks.
