Charlie McDaniel laughs when he looks back on one of his most vivid memories playing football.

"I was on the middle school team at Walker Grant and two of us got to work out with the high school team," the athletic senior said. "There were two quarterbacks throwing to two lines of receivers."

Being new, McDaniel was eager to show what he could do in front of the upperclassmen. He took his place in line and ran his route.

"When I got near the end of the route, I looked at the quarterback and wondered why he wasn't throwing the ball," McDaniel said. "I didn't realize I was watching the wrong quarterback."

As he turned around, the ball hit him squarely on the helmet and everyone began to laugh.

McDaniel can look back on the incident and smile today, but on that summer day, it was not that easy.

"It was the first time any of those guys saw me and it totally embarrassed me," he said.

"But it also taught me a valuable lesson to always pay attention and know what is happening around you."

RUSHING ATTACK

The bruising running of rushing leader Mike Latney will be a big key while JM's young quarterbacks develop. Returnee A.J. Sims will line up at fullback.

Watch out for: Versatile TB Ethan Preston (5-10, 190 Sr.) can play both running back positions, as well as linebacker and noseguard.

PASSING ATTACK

All-region receivers Greg Edwards and Keenan Carter are gone, but speedsters DeAndre McCallum and A'darius Brown should provide reliable targets for new quarterbacks Demontaz Brown and Alex Girvan.

Watch out for: WR Ryan Haynes (5-9, 135 Sr.) is an experienced receiver who can also kick, if needed.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Four returning starters make this a formidable unit that could develop into one of Serbay's best. Tackle Will Campbell and guard Nelson King are a solid combination on the left side.

Watch out for: Veteran C Nick Kroko (6-2, 235, Sr.) is also the long snapper for special teams.

DEFENSIVE LINE

End Charlie McDaniel and tackle Will Campbell will be the cornerstones of this versatile group. Preston is an aggressive noseguard, who will move to linebacker when JM shifts to a four-man front.

Watch out for: Returnee Ernie Quintana (5-10, 250 Sr.) is impressing at tackle.

LINEBACKERS

Should be rock-solid with hard-hitting returning starters Kilo Brooks and A.J. Sims leading the way. Brooks will be the new man in the middle.

Watch out for: New outside backer LaJuan Sims (5-11, 202 Sr.) started for Spotsylvania last year.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

The loss of all-state DB Farkeem French is a big blow, but there is plenty of speed and savvy with returning corners Tyran Bates and Travis Writt.

Watch out for: Julian Bumbrey (5-9, 160 So.) takes over at free safety.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The kicking game is in capable hands with everyone returning, including punter Nick Davis, placekicker Chris Paige (19 PATs) and holder Tyran Bates.

Watch out for: A'darius Brown (5-8, 150 Jr.) is an electrifying kickoff and punt returner.

After being denied a chance to defend their state title last year, the Yellow Jackets are approaching this season as an opportunity to take care of unfinished business.

Seven returning starters from a defense that gave up only 49 points will be a big asset. With only two players likely to go both ways, depth should be another big plus.

If new quarterbacks Demontaz Brown and Alex Girvan can guide the offense, and workhorse back Mike Latney stays healthy, JM has a good chance to return to the playoffs again.

*--District game

"The Battlefield District race is going to be a real dog fight. If our players play like they're capable, we should be right in the middle of it."
