'Malaise' is right!
The Aug. 25 editorial ["Econo-woes"] astutely summarizes our current economic situation, but only way deep down does it refer to "malaise." That term vividly recalls the label for the Jimmy Carter years. If I remember correctly, it took Ronald Reagan to bring us out of that malaise and restore America's confidence. Now we need another hero to bring us out of Obama's malaise. Congressional elections in November will be the first step, making Nancy Pelosi just a bad dream soon forgotten. In an earlier time when similar philosophies afflicted his own country, Britain's Winston Churchill observed, "Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy." We simply must get past our own. Ben R. Blankenship Jr. Stafford
but that's it.
By the '78 midterms, Reagan was already well on his way to establishing himself as a front-runner. Modest but surprising wins in both houses, 6 state governors, 300+ state offices by the GOP set the stage for '80. This time around, there is no clear front-runner. Makes me wonder if the wannabes are laying low until next year, or if the GOP is having a bit of an image problem. All part of the "silly season", I guess. One thing is for sure-November 2 is going to be a bad day for Democrats.
While I somewhat agree with the initial premise of the article, that a maliase is spreading across the nation, I strongly disagree that a new "Reagan" will appear on the right to fix things. The GOP has been out of the big ideas business for a while now. They are great at saying what they are against, but offer precious little on what they would do in place of Obama's plans.
you know how Ronnie came to the rescue. Crippling tax rates. You seem to be suggesting this is what we need now. Tisk, tisk... that thar is socialism, unless the handout is to the casino capitalists on Wall St. Don'tcha see what cutting taxes in a time of (multiple) war does to an economy?
Useful - I hope you're right about a Govt shutdown - I could really use a paid vacation. I'll be the first in line to request unemployment benefits and I'll gladly sit at home until those benefits run out. Since I'm an overpaid govt worker, I've been able to stash enough cash to last me through the tough times. Besides, we always get our jobs back with back pay anyway so this is a sweet deal - great job Dick Morris!!!!
