Local July unemployment data Date published: 9/2/2010
BY BILL FREEHLING The Fredericksburg region's unemployment rate dropped slightly in July from the month before to 6.4 percent, the Virginia Employment Commission reported yesterday. The region--which comprises Fredericksburg and Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties--trailed only Northern Virginia, whose regional jobless rate was 5 percent. The Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District--which includes Culpeper, Orange and Fauquier counties--had a 6.7 percent rate in July, also one of the lowest in the state. The statewide jobless rate was 7.1 percent in July, same as the month before and 14th-best in the U.S. North Dakota had the nation's best rate at 3.5 percent, while Nevada's 14.4 percent was the worst. The nationwide rate was 9.7 percent. The figures are not adjusted for seasonal factors. The Fredericksburg area had a 6.5 percent jobless rate in June and 6 percent in July 2009. The region's 10-year monthly average is 3.3 percent, showing that the area continues to be plagued by higher-than-normal joblessness despite outperforming most areas of the country. Most area localities had slightly lower jobless rates in July compared with the month before. Fauquier's 5.6 percent rate in July tied for sixth-best in the state, while Stafford also finished in the top 10. As usual, Arlington County (4.2 percent) had the state's lowest jobless rate in July, while Martinsville, at 20.6 percent, had the highest rate. Bill Freehling: 540/374-5405
