As Tyler Wilson sprinted toward his fourth touchdown of the game last night, Colo-nial Forge's collective determination came to the fore.
Faced with pesky non-district challenger Forest Park in their season opener, the Eagles proved they could overcome a few mental lapses and shine when they have to. After taking a commanding halftime lead, they squashed the Bruins' spirited comeback attempt and pulled away for an ugly
"We really wanted to shut them out, but they came back in the second half with a head of steam, so we just had to keep punching at them," Wilson said.
Wilson's three first-half touchdowns and three first-half Forest Park turnovers helped the Eagles burst to a 33-0 lead.
Forest Park, however, trimmed the lead to 33-21 in the third quarter.
So if the Eagles take anything away from this tuneup for next week's marquee matchup against fellow Northwest Region power Woodbridge, it's that they can respond to another team's best shot.
"Our kids held together," Colonial Forge coach Bill Brown said.
There were plenty of positives the Eagles can cling to and enough negatives to keep them busy at practice this week.
The first half was about as one-sided as it gets. Colonial Forge outgained Forest Park, 238 yards to 14 before halftime.
Forest Park (0-2) had turnovers three straight times it touched the ball--an interception and fumbles on consecutive kickoff returns.
