There's much to do and see at the upcoming Virginia State Fair Date published: 9/16/2010
DEAR FRIEND, Did you visit the State Fair of Virginia at It's a whole lot of fun and a great place to take the kids. And the price isn't bad, either--it costs anywhere from $10 to $15, depending on when you go, and that includes parking and the concerts. Or you can buy a walk-around pass for the 11-day fair for $30--and if you get it by Wednesday, it's only $23. A new package being offered this year is one-day gate admission and 40 ride tickets for $30. If you have a valid Department of Defense identification, you can get a $3 discount off the standard walk-around gate price for your family. And don't worry about missing the fair because of high school football on Friday nights. They've added what they call "Friday Night Lights," where you can get 60 ride tickets for $20 after 9 p.m., and the midway stays open until 1 a.m. Nearly 250,000 people attended last year, which was the fair's debut in Caroline County after being in Richmond for several years. This site is much bigger and greener, with 360-acres of land framed with green grass and white picket fences. If you aren't sure about going to the 11-day event, let me tell you what they have! ACTIVITIES It wouldn't be the state fair if it didn't have the traditional favorites, such as the barnyard animals at Young McDonald's Farm. They've got goats, cows, pigs, rabbits, chickens, horses and other cute little furry things that you can pet. You might even see little chicks and calves being born. The state fair has a state-of-the-art 143-stall barn, and four show rings, for more than 20 horse events competitions and demonstrations. They even preserved the shed where Secretariat was born. You know, Secretariat--the 1973 Triple Crown winner that was born right there where the state fair is. There's a Disney movie about him that's coming out next month with Diane Lane.
