Woman robbed at Eagle Village Giant yesterday
BY BRIAN BAER
A University of Mary Washington student's mother visiting for the school's Family Weekend was assaulted and robbed in a nearby grocery store yesterday afternoon, police said.
The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. at the Giant supermarket in Eagle Village on U.S. 1.
City police say the 50-year-old victim, who is from Chesapeake, had just entered the store when a man came up from behind, grabbed her and stole her purse.
The victim fell to the floor, but managed to get up and chase the attacker through the glass-enclosed exit, where they both fell.
The two tussled briefly before the man was able to run outside.
As the attacker fled, a store employee ran out, hurdled the victim and was able to get a description of the car the man left in.
The attacker is described as a clean-shaven black male in his 30s. He wore a black tank top, khaki shorts and a black ball cap. He wore white sneakers and glasses.
He left in a gold Cadillac with Maryland plates. Police say the vehicle is registered to a woman in Oxon Hill, Md.
The victim sustained minor injuries, but declined medical treatment.
Police said the woman's husband and daughter were waiting with their car near the new Eagle Landing student apartments adjacent to the grocery store.
