John 'Monk' Reynolds

John E. "Monk" Reynolds, 73, of Fredericksburg passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 1, 1937, in Alexandria, the son of the late Harvey and Della Reynolds.

Mr. Reynolds was a U.S. Navy veteran. Upon leaving the military, he founded and edited the Mid-Eastern Drag News in 1961. He also founded Super Stock magazine and was the co-owner of the York U.S. 30 Drag Raceway in York, Pa., in the late '60s and early '70s. Later in his career he owned the 1320 Club in Alexandria and the 1320 II Club in Springfield.

He was the founder and owner of Showday Farms and Commonwealth Park in Culpeper and the former owner of the Governor Spotswood Estate in Locust Grove. Before retiring, he owned and operated Country Home Builders, constructing many buildings in the Locust Grove area including the Lake of the Woods Self Storage, The Car Doctor and many homes in Lake of the Woods.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Lee Reynolds; his daughters, Tara Trabor, and Jonnie Kay Becker and her husband, Jens; his step- daughter, Pamela Cocker; his brother, Frank Reynolds of Arlington; and his sister, Margaret Bivens of Indiana. He is also survived by two granddaughters; one grandson; one stepgranddaughter; a great-grandson; and by his six sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Harvey James Reynolds.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Laurel Hill Funeral Home in Spotsylvania. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the funeral home by the Rev. Tom Schafer. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Jay Reynolds, Alex Judd, Jens Becker, Rick Williams, John Judd and Gary Johnston.
