Jeff Rouse chosen to Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Date published: 1/20/2011
FROM STAFF REPORTS Three-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Jeff Rouse will be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame April 30 in Portsmouth. Rouse, a 1988 Stafford High School graduate, is part of a seven-man Class of 2011 that also includes former University of Virginia and New York Giants star Tiki Barber and former University of Richmond basketball standout Johnny Newman. Rouse held the world record in the 100-meter backstroke from 1991-99. He won a gold medal in the event in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta after claiming silver in 1992 in Barcelona. He also anchored the U.S. to victory in the 400 medley relay in both Olympics. He also won seven NCAA titles at Stanford University, two Pan American Games golds and a gold and silver at the 1994 world championships. He is a member of the Stanford and International Swimming halls of fame. Other members of the 2011 class included recently retired Old Dominion University athletic director Jim Jarrett; longtime Hopewell High School boys basketball coach Bill Littlepage; Olympic and world champion boxer Pernell "Sweetpea" Whitaker; and longtime Bristol Herald-Courier sportswriter Eugene "Pappy" Thompson. The induction ceremony will be held April 30 at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel.
