Area businesses earn honors from Chamber
Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce announces its annual award recipients

Date published: 1/29/2011

First Choice Better Homes and Land, Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center and the downtown Courtyard by Marriott were among the local businesses recognized at last night's annual Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce gala event.

The chamber event was held at the Fredericksburg Hospitality House and Conference Center. The awards honored area businesses for their "business successes, entrepreneurial spirit and community commitment."

Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center took home the Large Business of the Year Award--for businesses with more than 15 employees. The chamber pointed out that SRMC has hired almost 500 people since opening last year and has contributed widely to regional health care as well as to local charities and Spotsylvania County's tax base.

The First Choice Better Homes and Land real estate firm won the Small Business of the Year Award. Ann Black's firm, which was founded two decades ago, built a new, larger office on Bragg Road in Spotsylvania amid the recession and a road-widening project.

Entrepreneur of the Year went to Leigh Anne Van Doren, founder and publisher of Fredericksburg Parent and Family magazine. The chamber noted that she has run the magazine for 10 years and has turned it into a glossy color publication with a digital presence.

Two businesses were awarded Economic Impact Awards. The first went to the downtown Courtyard by Marriott, which the chamber said creates a "new vitality downtown and for the region." The other went to the University of Mary Washington Foundation for its mixed-use Eagle Village project, which the chamber said has led the way for "urban renewal and revitalization of the aging U.S. Route 1 corridor."

The Prince B. Woodard Leadership Award went to Tom Bricken, an attorney with Sands Anderson. The award recognizes community service, which the chamber said Bricken has provided in abundance through his work with the Stafford Regional Airport, Fredericksburg Regional Alliance, Fredericksburg Rotary Club and more.
