What's the status of various area projects?

Fredericksburg officials have been working since 2007 to upgrade the city's court facilities. They haven't yet settled on a location or a plan.

State Route 3 extension

The story so far: Workers are widening a four-lane portion of State Route 3 in Spotsylvania from Chewning Lane and Rutherford Drive to Gordon Road. It's the last section of the road with four lanes between Interstate 95 and the Harrison Crossing shopping center.

Outlook: Construction is proceeding on target to widen Route 3 to six lanes near Gordon Road by the summer of 2012.

When the project is completed, six median crossovers on Route 3 where vehicles made left turns and U-turns will be closed. Traffic will instead use turn lanes and traffic signals at four intersections: Chewning Lane and Rutherford Drive, Chancellor Village and Single Oak Road, Old Plank Road and Five-Mile Fork Extended, and Gordon Road.

Town Center at Aquia

The story so far: Ramco-Gershenson Properties Trust is in the process of transforming Aquia Town Center in Stafford from a 200,000-square-foot grocery-anchored shopping center into a 725,000-square-foot mixed-use development featuring offices, retail and restaurants, entertainment and fitness, and high-end apartments.

Outlook: The former Big Lots building has been torn down, and additional site work has been done. "The deal is still progressing," said Thomas W. Litzler, executive vice president for development and new business initiatives.

VRE IN SPOTSYLVANIA

The story so far: After more than a decade of voting down the Virginia Railway Express, the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors last year finally approved joining the commuter rail network.

Outlook: First a station has to be built in the county. Spotsylvania's supervisors have selected a site in the Crossroads Business Park. VRE is now designing a third track between the proposed station and a point just south of the Fredericksburg train station, which track owner CSX requires before service begins. Then the VRE must secure funding for construction and get the track built. VRE officials think it will be ready in 2013, though Spotsylvania officials are hoping for next year.
