Shootout, drug arrests in Culpeper
Culpeper shootout lands man in jail
A midnight driveway shootout sent one Culpeper man to the hospital and another to jail.
The incident, which allegedly involved a protective order, began shortly after midnight yesterday morning, according to Corey Byers of the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office.
During the altercation on Cedar Tree Lane, 52-year-old Clyde Edwards Jr. allegedly used a hunting rifle to shoot at a second man whom police would not identify.
The second man allegedly returned fire with a pistol.
It was initially reported that the second man had been shot, but investigators determined that he had suffered only minor injuries from a physical altercation, Byers said.
Edwards was charged with malicious wounding, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, shooting into an occupied vehicle and violation of a protective order.
He is being held in the Culpeper Adult Detention Center with no bond.
Two men arrested
Two men face drug charges following investigations by the Culpeper street crimes unit, which is made up of investigators from the sheriff's office and town police.
Early Wednesday evening Robert Lee Williams Jr., 27, of South East Street was arrested on Evans Street following a short chase and a struggle with police, according to town public information officer Wally Bunker.
Williams was charged with felony possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, two felony counts of assault and battery of police officers and misdemeanor obstruction of justice.
Shortly before 9 p.m. that same evening, the unit arrested 26-year-old Sergio Rene Mejia (address unknown) at Lake Pelham.
Mejia was charged in a separate incident with one felony count of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
Both arrests were made following tips to police.
