Richard H. Stewart
Richard Henry Stewart, 91, husband of Anna Ashley Stewart, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011. Mr. Stewart was born on June 30, 1920, in Spotsylvania County, a son of the late Frederick Willard and Grace Harris. Richard graduated from high school and remained in Spotsylvania. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Richard was on his sixth mission over Germany with the 351st Bomb Group when, at age 23, he had to parachute to safety after the plane was damaged by enemy fire. Richard was taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans until May 1945. At the end of the war, he returned to Virginia and joined the state police force, assigned to the Tidewater area. It was at that time he met his future wife, Anna Ashley. Richard re-entered the service with the U.S. Air Force to participate in the Berlin airlift. He remained in the military until he retired in 1966. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Ex-Prisoners of War. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Anna Ashley Stewart; two sons, Richard Stewart (and Pat) of Virginia Beach and Tom Stewart (and Janice) of Mount Pleasant; his sister, Agnes Whitlock of Virginia; and four grandchildren.
